Educate Children about Premium Rate Services

This section of phonesmart.ie is specifically aimed at giving you, the parent, the information you will need to educate your child about premium rate services (PRS). The range of premium rate services has grown considerably in recent years, allowing access to information, advice and entertainment services as well as facilitating audience participation in TV and radio shows.

The most popular types of premium rate services are:

  • Calls or texts to competitions/voting lines/ quiz shows
  • Text services (e.g. news or text alerts)
  • Downloading games, ringtones, wallpapers or full music tracks

The mobile phone is the dominant method of accessing most types of premium rate services, with online/internet access also key for certain types of services. With ever increasing numbers of children owning a mobile phone and/or having internet access, education and awareness about premium rate services is essential.

It is important to note that most premium rate services operate without any problems at all. The problems that do occur can sometimes be due to a lack of understanding on the consumer’s part.

Education and awareness is key

Your child needs to know:

What is a premium rate service?
How do I know what a premium rate service is?
How much do premium rate services cost?
How do I stop a premium rate service?
What else do I need to know?
Can I be charged for receiving a text?

Please visit the Common Questions section of this website for answers to these questions.

If you’re having problems with a premium rate service, firstly you need to contact the service provider directly to address the issue. If, after contacting the premium rate service provider, your issue is not resolved, we’re here to help.
